Silvering Beauty: Product Review
Inside: My review of Silvering Beauty’s entire product line, showcasing two products that I believe are must-haves for women who are mid-transition or fully gray.
One of my favorite things to do is to test products that are created specifically for women with gray hair.
But do you know what’s even better?
When those products are created by a fellow silver sister! Who better to understand our gray hair wants and needs than one of our own?
So when Alexis Eizinas, the founder of Silvering, reached out and offered to send me her entire product line to test, I was thrilled to accept.

I’ve tested a lot of products over the past 6 years since I went gray, and I’m happy to report that I’m not only impressed with this entire line but I’m especially blown away by two of its products that I consider absolute game-changers for women with gray hair.

Even though Silvering sent me the products to test, this is not a sponsored post. As always, all opinions are my own and not influenced by any outside party.

What is Silvering Beauty?
Silvering Beauty is a line of hair and beauty products created specifically to meet the needs of “silvering” (aka “graying”) women.
Unlike many major hair and beauty brands that ignore or dismiss the needs of our demographic, Silvering celebrates women with naturally silver hair by providing high-quality, non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty-free products just for us.
All of their products are formulated to NOT build up on our hair, or stain our hair, which is HUGE as so many mainstream products (like Argan oil) don’t consider that.
Silvering’s products are made in Canada and come in lovely sustainable packaging, which I appreciate. Cardboard and glass are the main packaging types, although plastic is used sparingly only as needed.
Silvering also gives a percentage of all their profits to the Look Good Feel Better organization, a national charity that supports women dealing with cancer.
Women over 40 who’ve gone through chemo are often surprised to see that their hair grows in silver, so I love that Silvering is there to help them see that silvering hair can be beautiful and stylish and not something to be dreaded.
My Two Favorite Silvering Beauty Products
Before I move on to the other products in their line, I’ll cut to the chase: These are the two Silvering products that I’m most excited about: Border Line and Tonal Control.
Border Line Optical Hair Line Filler
My absolute favorite Silvering product is the Border Line Optical Hair Line Filler. It’s a pressed powder that comes in two shades: White or Salt and Pepper.
You can use Border Line to fill in your hairline and create the illusion of thicker hair – just make sure to choose the shade that matches the area that you’re trying to fill in.
Here’s Where Border Line Comes in Especially Handy
A lot of women who are in the early stages of transitioning to gray fear that they’re going bald, because of what I call “the baldness illusion”:
The “Baldness” illusion: Once you let your white/gray roots grow in, it might suddenly appear as if your part line is widening due to the stark contrast between your dyed hair and your translucent (“white”) roots.
When they see this for the first time, many women (myself included!) freak out and assume that they’re losing a lot of hair, but it’s just an illusion and it goes away once your dyed hair has been cut off, or your roots have grown out more.
In the meantime, it can make you feel self-conscious.
And this is where the Border Line comes in so handy! Just brush it directly on your scalp and blend it with your hairline to instantly make your hair look fuller and thicker.
How to use Border Line If You’re Fully Gray
But even if you’re already fully gray, as I am, Border Line is still super useful.
For example, when I pull my hair back, my darker underlayers are exposed and, even though I have thick hair, you can see my scalp a bit – so I can use the Salt & Pepper shade to fill those areas in and make my hair look fuller.
Silvering Border Line Before & After Photos
I can also use the White Border Line to fill in the part of my scalp that is exposed by my cowlick, so it doesn’t look like a bald spot:
You can also use the White Border Line to lighten sections of your hair, giving you instant highlights. And you can use the Salt & Pepper Border Line to deepen your lowlights.
So if you’re unhappy with your particular shade of gray hair, you can play with each shade to make your natural hair look the way you want it to. I think that’s a huge benefit!
What I also like about Border Line, aside from its versatility, is that it’s also easy to apply, and it rinses out once you wash your hair. Just reapply it as needed. And from what I’ve experienced, it doesn’t appear to leave any residue behind, which is great!
Ingredients
CERTIFIED ASBESTOS-FREE TALC,TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE, BISMUTH OXYCHLORIDE (CI 77163), POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE, SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, OCTYLDODECYL STEARATE, OCTYLDODECYL STEAROYL STEARATE, PHENOXYETHANOL IRON OXIDES (CI 77499), (CI 77492), (CI 77491)
Tonal Control Concentrated Toning Mix
My other favorite Silvering product is the Tonal Control Concentrated Toning Mix. It’s designed to brighten your naturally silver hair by neutralizing unwanted yellow tones, similar to purple shampoo.
But honestly? It’s WAY better than purple shampoo.
In fact, it’s so much better that I plan to start using it in place of purple shampoo from now on, and I think you might want to consider doing the same.
Why Silvering’s Tonal Control is Better Than Purple Shampoo
Many of the purple shampoos on the market today were designed to meet the needs of bleached blonde hair – not the unique needs of naturally silver hair.
This explains why so many purple shampoos leave our hair feeling incredibly dry, and why purple shampoo can be damaging if used too often.
Purple shampoos are also sold in separate plastic containers from your “everyday” shampoo, so they clutter up your shelves and add extra plastic waste to your local landfills.
And you often have to use separate products (like deep conditioners or masks) to counteract the drying effects of purple shampoo, leading to even more clutter and plastic waste.
Tonal Control solves all of these issues!
It’s a concentrated toning mix that comes in a glass bottle. You only need to add 2-3 drops of it to your favorite white or clear shampoo or conditioner to get the same beautiful toning effect that you would get from purple shampoo. And, unlike purple shampoo, it doesn’t dry out your hair. In fact, my hair feels extra-moisturized when I use it, which is a nice benefit!
I’ll be honest, I was a bit skeptical when I first saw the Tonal Control – whether just pumped directly into my hand, or mixed into my favorite conditioner, because it didn’t look very purple at all, it looked more blue.
And blue is usually used to neutralize orange tones, not yellow tones. So I was pretty sure it wouldn’t have any effect on my yellowing ends, but I used it anyway and was very pleasantly surprised!
My hair looks as bright (or brighter) after using it, than it does with purple shampoo. I’m blown away. I absolutely love this product!
NOTE: Tonal Control should also work well for brunettes who are mid-transition and dealing with fading dye and brassy, orange ends.
Considering how blue it looks, I’m assuming it will do a great job of neutralizing the orange tones – but I can’t test that myself at this stage of my hair journey, so if you try it, let me know how you like it!

How to use Silvering Tonal Control
- For regular upkeep: Add 2-3 drops of it to your favorite white or clear shampoo or conditioner, mix it with your finger, and then apply and use as you normally would. Use as needed (effects fade after 3-5 washes).
- As a leave-in: Add 1-2 pumps of Tonal Control to your favorite leave-in product every 3-5 washes
- As a spot treatment: Add 3-8 pumps of Tonal Control into a double serving of your favorite mask or conditioner, and apply it only to areas that need extra help due to discoloration. Leave in for 5 minutes and rinse out.

Additional Products
Border Line and Tonal Control are my favorite Silvering Beauty products but they also have other products that are well worth a try:
True Expression Natural Brow Duo & Brush
Women with transitioning or fully gray hair often get frustrated trying to find eyebrow products that complement their natural hair color and skin tone.
But Silvering’s True Expression Natural Brow Duos come in two shade options that will meet most women’s needs:
- Cool Duo: For women whose original natural hair color was dark brunette or black
- Warm Duo: For women whose original natural hair color was blonde, red, or light brunette
You can apply the powders either wet or dry, depending on your preference, which is a nice feature.
I tested the Cool Duo, since I have cool-toned skin and my original hair color was dark brunette.
After testing both the Subtle and the Dramatic shades of the Cool Duo, I have to say I prefer the Subtle one as the Dramatic is too dark for my skin tone.
I liked the Subtle shade both wet and dry, but the wet is more bold and I’m leaning towards that one.
Unfortunately, I can’t share photos quite yet as I’m going through skin cancer treatment and have a W.C. Fields-style red nose right now 😥. I’ll update this post with photos soon).
Unlike some eyebrow powders, True Expression seems to stay in place very well – it didn’t smudge or end up on my cheek like a lot of them do.
Personally, I prefer to use an eyebrow pencil, but if you like powders, True Expression Natural Brow Duo is a well-made, versatile product that gets the job done.

Root Rouser Activating Leave-in Scalp Massage Serum
Root Rouser is designed to not only nourish your scalp, but also to promote hair growth and reduce hair shedding.
I almost didn’t try Root Rouser because:
a) ever since I ditched hair dye my hair loss has stopped
b) my natural hair is quite thick, and
c) I never pay much attention to my scalp (even though I know I should)!
I also worried that the Root Rouser might make my hair feel or look greasy.
But I dutifully massaged it onto my clean scalp (as well as my eyebrows) on my most recent washday. I worried that my hair would look greasy or feel weighed down after using it, but it didn’t!
I haven’t used it enough yet to see if my hair (or eyebrow) growth accelerates, but I’ll keep using it and will update this post at a later date with my results.
Root Rouser has a light, soothing lavender scent. I plan to put it on my eyebrows before bed so the lavender scent helps me sleep.
NOTE: You’re supposed to use Root Rouser on a clean scalp, so I plan to use it only on wash days. You can also use it to tame flyaways as needed, which is a great side benefit.
Ingredients:
WATER (AQUA / EAU), PROPANEDIOL, POLYSORBATE 20, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, XANTHAN GUM, PHENOXYETHANOL, LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) OIL, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, DEXTRAN, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT, ACETYL TETRAPEPTIDE-3, TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE (CLOVER) FLOWER EXTRACT – MAY CONTAIN IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499) FOR SHADE ADJUSTMENTS
Shine & Define Dry Finishing Oil
Shine & Define Dry Finishing Oil is designed to smooth, nourish, and add shine to naturally silver hair without the risk of discoloration.
Unlike many mass-market hair oils, it does NOT contain silicones, which is fantastic as silicones can build up on gray hair, leaving it dull and yellowed over time.
I don’t use hair oils very often, but I’m way overdue for a haircut so my ends are very dry. Just a couple of drops of Shine & Define helped calm the frizz on my dry ends and added extra shine to my hair.
The fact that it’s not greasy is a big bonus! It also has a pleasing (faint) coconut scent and it feels very lightweight – it doesn’t weigh your hair down.
I live in a very dry climate (Los Angeles) but I think this product could come in especially handy if you live in a humid climate and are prone to unwanted frizz.
Ingredients:
C15-19 ALKANE, COCONUT ALKANES, ISOHEXADECANE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, COCO-CAPRYLATE/CAPRATE, ETHYLENE/PROPYLENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER, BUTYLENE/ETHYLENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER, PHENOXYETHANOL, FRAGRANCE (PARFUM), ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, BHT
Who Should Use Silvering Beauty Products?
Silvering’s products are so well made that most women (even those who aren’t gray) could benefit from using them.
However, their products are uniquely well-suited to women who:
- Are mid-transition or fully gray
- Want to keep their naturally silver hair healthy & hydrated
- Are prone to yellowing
- Care about the environment and animal welfare
- Support women-owned small businesses
- Appreciate corporate integrity
My Recommendations
The Silvering line is a bit of an anomaly for me as I usually find one product in a product line that I don’t like, but honestly, I like ALL of their products.
Tonal Control and Border Line are my favorites, however. I can’t think of anything on the market that works as well as those two products do to solve the issues that they target, so I’m going to shout those products from the rooftops from this day forward!
Final Thoughts
Having tested Silvering Beauty’s entire product line, I’m actually quite moved – it’s like someone finally gets it! Naturally silver hair has different needs than dyed hair, and they’ve done a great job formulating products that suit OUR needs to a tee.
And the fact that Silvering uses clean ingredients and follows ethical practices is something I find admirable. So, I wholeheartedly recommend them.
