DIY Purple Mask for Gray Hair Brightening
This mask will clean and brighten your naturally silver hair and leave it feeling soft & moisturized.
This mask was invented by my friend Joli Campbell of QuickSilverHair.com – and she knows everything there is to know about the science of gray hair!
It will also remove unwanted yellow tones caused by air pollution, product buildup, and mineral buildup – and it will neutralize yellowing caused by sun and heat damage, making your silver hair appear brighter and more silvery until the mask wears off.
Mask Ingredients
Here are all of the ingredients and supplies that you’ll need to have on hand:
- A Chelating or Clarifying shampoo – Malibu Undo Goo is my preferred clarifying shampoo these days. It does a great job!
- QuickSilverHair Squalane Kit – this is one of my favorite gray hair products. The kit contains both QuickSilverHair Clay and QuickSilverHair squalane oil. These products will clean and brighten your gray hair, and will also remove product build-up.
- A silicone-free conditioner: The conditioner must be silicone-free to activate the ingredients in the mask!
My favorites are either the Mielle Organics Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner (if your hair is very dry and needs a deep conditioning treatment) or the Acure Curiously Clarifying conditioner if your hair isn’t feeling especially dry. - Manic Panic Ultra Violet: – this is how we’re going to add purple tones to our DIY mask. Purple is the opposite of yellow on the color wheel, so it neutralizes yellow tones and makes your hair look more silvery. Manic Panic is safe to use on gray hair. However, if you are prone to allergies to purple dyes, you might want to do a patch test beforehand just in case.
- A medium-sized bowl
- Shower Cap: You can use a disposable shower cap, although I prefer to use a regular shower cap as the mask rinses out fairly easily.
How to Mix Up the Mask
- Grab your medium-sized bowl
- Add enough conditioner to the bowl to cover ALL of your hair
- Add an equal amount of QuickSilverHair Clay
- Add 3-4 pumps of Squalane Oil. You must use the oil to activate the clay!
- Add just enough Manic Panic to make the mask look light lavender. If you use too much Manic Panic, you might end up with purple hair!
- Stir the mask thoroughly – you do not want blobs of purple color in your hair. The mask should feel like cake frosting. *If it’s too thin, add more QuickSilverHair clay. If it’s too thick, add more conditioner.
How to Apply the Mask
Would you like to save this article?
- Wash your hair well with the clarifying shampoo.
- Rinse out the shampoo very thoroughly.
- Apply the mask to your freshly clarified, wet hair – don’t be too precious, you can just glop it on! For best results, make sure to cover your hair from roots to tips.
- Once your entire head of hair is covered by the mask, cover your hair with a shower cap.
- Set a timer for 20-40 minutes. (I prefer to do 40 minutes if I need extra conditioning)
- After your timer goes off, get back into the shower and make sure to rinse every last bit of the mask out of your hair. You can shampoo & condition if you feel like you need to, but it’s not necessary.
- Style your hair like usual.
