19 Products that Will Make Your Transition to Gray Hair Fun!

Here is a guide for ladies who are embracing their gray hair and want to add a little “oomph” to their appearance with the best gray hair care products, skin care products, and cosmetics.  And my favorite part? These are all products that are recommended by your fellow silver sisters on Instagram!

My biggest worry about letting my hair go gray was that people would think I was “letting myself go.”

Why? Because when you’ve spent the last 20 years scrambling to cover up your gray roots every 3 weeks, it’s easy to fall into that mindset that gray = bad, messy or unkempt.

“Who’s that crazy woman?” I pictured people saying as I walked down the street, my silver roots and orange, brassy ends ablaze in the morning sun…

Well, if you have these kinds of worries, too, check out the suggestions below from your fellow silver sisters. Their product recommendations will give your appearance that extra “oomph” that will banish those kinds of worries forever.

Best Gray Hair Care Products

Do you “plop” your hair? Plopping sounds like something that happens after a bad bout of food poisoning (!), but it’s actually a great method to help you dry your hair without frizz!

I just tried this recently for the first time and I was pretty happy with the results.

First, I shampooed my hair with my favorite clarifying shampoo, and then I used the BTWCo’s awesome leave-in conditioner

I wrapped my hair up in an old T-shirt and let it air dry while I completed my morning routine.  My hair came out curly and NOT frizzy – a miracle!

But it was hard to keep the t-shirt in place and I got a little frustrated.  Next time, I’m going to try using this microfiber hair turban recommended to me by fellow Instagrammer @youngandgray29:

How about a nice silk pillowcase?

Silk pillowcases protect you from bed-head and are Curly-Girl friendly! They also are supposed to lessen your chance of getting wrinkles.  (Why didn’t I know about this when I was young and had perfect skin?)

Sandrine recommends Clarins Beauty Flash Balm – it eliminates the signs of fatigue and gives your skin a radiant glow!

Do you like masks? I recently started using City Beauty’s Line-Smoothing HydroMask. Scared the heck out of my younger son when he saw me wearing it, but it was worth it!

My skin tends to be dry, and this gave it a nice boost in the hydration department. Use the code KATIEGOESPLATINUM to get a 15% discount and free shipping over $50

Jewelry for Silver Sisters

@amberbjones recommends statement earrings. Red is a great color for silver vixens, so something like these could really complement your hair:

Best Makeup to Complement your Gray Hair

Eyes

Eva recommends L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara. Considering that she has gorgeous, long lashes, I’m definitely going to be buying some of this for myself!

For eyeshadow, Joanna suggests the Urban Decay Naked Palette, and I second that recommendation! It’s a beautiful collection of neutral shades that look especially nice if you are wearing bright lipstick.

Lips

As we get older, our lips get thinner (I didn’t know that, did you? I just found out recently….to my horror!).

Anyway, I recently started using City Lips Plumping Lip Glosses to give my lips more volume.

My favorite is the clear one: I put it on, wait about 3 minutes, and then apply my regular lipstick. It keeps the lipstick from feathering and adds a nice, glossy touch.

Supposedly, if you use it every day for 30 days, it reduces lines and wrinkles around your lips (I simply cannot remember to do it every day, but if I ever do get more organized, I’ll let you know!) I added my favorite colors below (Pink Nude, Red Velvet, and Clear).

Cheeks

Need a little color to brighten up your face? @silvergirlmx recommends MAC cream blushes – creams tend to be kinder to mature skin as opposed to powders, and MAC products are beautiful quality.

If you are transitioning to gray hair, you should really document your journey. It’s so fun to see how your hair changed over time, and (if you don’t mind sharing on social media) it’s also super-helpful for other women to see your progress!

Included below are ring lights, a phone tripod, a microphone (if you are recording video for YouTube or IGTV) and my favorite phone adapter for standard-sized tripods:
