Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo Review
Inside: A comprehensive review of Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo
This is a sponsored post on behalf of Pantene. All opinions are my own and are not influenced by outside parties.
As a grey hair blogger, I love to try out hair products and report back to my silver sisters on whether or not the product is worthwhile.
While researching products to help brighten grey hair, I kept coming across women lamenting the discontinuation of Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo.
But ladies, I’m happy to announce that it is now BACK on the market!
Does it live up to the hype?
I’ll get to that in a second. But first:

WHY USE PURPLE SHAMPOO ANYWAY?
When grey hair is at its best, it looks shiny, silvery, glittery and bright.
But sun exposure, hard water, cigarette smoke, and other environmental factors can cause grey hair to look dingy and yellow.
That’s where Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo comes in!
Purple is the opposite of yellow on the color wheel, so purple shampoo helps neutralize yellow tones in grey hair. Neutralizing those brassy and yellow tones causes a lovely brightening effect.
MY PANTENE SILVER EXPRESSIONS PURPLE SHAMPOO REVIEW
The first thing I do whenever I try a new product is smell it.
I can’t stand heavily scented products. I’m happy to report that Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo has a very light floral scent. It is not overpowering at all.
I also read the label and was glad to see that Pantene Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo is paraben and silicone-free.
I try to avoid silicones as they can promote product build-up. And parabens can disrupt the body’s hormonal cycle (no thank you!). It is also color-safe, so it works on dyed grey hair as well!
(Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo is not sulfate-free, but I’m not a follower of the Curly Girl Method at this point, so being sulfate-free was not a big concern for me).
HOW I USED IT
Usually, when I use purple shampoo, I put it on dry hair and leave it on for 5 minutes before washing it out.
But the Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo bottle said to put the shampoo on wet hair and leave it on for 3-5 minutes. I decided to play it safe and left it on my wet hair for 4 minutes.
Since purple shampoo can be drying, I generally deep condition afterward. But I wanted to give the Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo a fair chance, so decided to just use my daily conditioner instead.
For reference, here are some before photos:
THE RESULTS?
OK, I have to tell the honest truth here – I am VERY happy with the results!

As I mentioned above, purple shampoos tend to be very drying. But even though I only used a regular strength conditioner, my hair felt very smooth and silky.
Was my hair brighter? Yes!
Was it SUPER bright? No. I don’t know of any purple shampoos that do that. But my white and silver strands stood out more in contrast to my dark strands (most of the underside of my hair is dark black). And that’s what I wanted.
My hair felt silky, smooth and soft – so I have no complaints!
HOW OFTEN CAN YOU USE THIS SHAMPOO?
Pantene says it is gentle enough to use every day – that’s unusual for purple shampoo.
With most purple shampoos, I would only recommend using them once a week at MOST as they can be drying. Nobody wants straw-like hair! And they can leave a purple tinge to the hair if used too often.
Since Pantene said it can be used every day, I decided to try it out and I washed my hair with Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo two days in a row.
The second day I used it, my hair was still as silky and soft as the first time. The silvers were still bright, and there was no purple tinge. Nice!
WHO CAN USE THIS PRODUCT?
Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo is safe for all types of hair but is especially recommended for people with grey, white and silver hair. It’s also good for dyed grey hair.
WHERE CAN YOU BUY IT?
Starting November 15th, 2019, you can buy Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo on Amazon.
CONCLUSION
Pantene made the right choice to bring this product back to the market.
It is affordable and lives up to its promise to brighten silver hair. I love that it’s paraben and silicone-free. And not having to deep condition afterward is a nice bonus.
Simply put, it’s a great purple shampoo for grey hair!

Hi! my hair is almost all silver, I want it to look white! Which shampoo should I buy, I want it to look platinum! Help!!!
I have used almost every shampoo on the market for brassy yellow in my gray hair none have worked. I am going to try this and hopefully it will work.
If this doesn’t work, have you tried Bold Uniq? They have one of the strongest formulas and it doesn’t dry out your hair (neither does the Pantene).
How do I get most of the black hair out of my gray, I have a black strip of hair on top right down the middle, I have pretty gray just want it more all one white or silver gray, I use purple shampoo but it doesn’t change the black hair, hope you can help
Hi, Dorothy: Is the black hair your natural color or dyed? If it’s your natural color, there’s nothing you can do unless you want to bleach it (which I wouldn’t advise as bleach can be very damaging). I think your hair pattern sounds cool, actually but if it’s bugging you, you might want to talk to a hairdresser about possible options. (Same response if your hair is dyed).
Do your purple shampoo stain the hair purple?
Not if you use it the correct way (i.e., not more than once a week). Hope that helps!
I used the original Pantene Silver Expressions and was very upset when it was discontinued. I can tell you for a fact it WAS NOT purple. Please bring back the original non-purple Silver Expressions.
Interesting, I had no idea it wasn’t purple originally! This one works very well for me, however.
I am new to this silver hair care. Can you tell me what conditioner you use with this shampoo? thanks!
Hi, Dawn! You can use any sulfate-free conditioner, but I prefer to use BTWCo’s Daily Moisturizing Conditioner. Pantene also makes some great conditioners but I haven’t had a chance to test them yet.
just curious, as most purple shampoos are abit harsh would it be better to use purple conditioner instead?
I haven’t found that purple conditioner works as well as shampoo to deposit color, but you could try it! The Pantene Pro-V is the least harsh purple shampoo I’ve tried, but if you try a different purple shampoo, you can always follow it up with a deep conditioner to offset the harshness.
I can’t thank you enough Katie for this shampoo. I love it.
I’m so glad! It’s the best, isn’t it? 🙂
Oh so happy that is shampoo is back
Isn’t it the best? I love it.
