Just Nutritive Shampoo: Is It Good For Gray Hair? (My Honest Review)

Inside: My honest review of Just Nutritive Gray Hair Shampoo & Conditioner

Have you been wondering whether the Just Nutritive Gray Hair Duo actually works?

You’re not alone.

Over the past few months, I’ve had countless women ask me to test these products. So I did. I tested them for 10 days.

And now my hair looks… well, not great.

Me, with flat, dingy hair – it’s the one photo I could salvage from this shoot.

My hair is filled with static. It feels like straw. And I’ve been on a total hair roller coaster ride since I first started testing it two weeks ago.

But here’s the thing…I can’t fully blame Just Nutritive for this disaster.

In today’s post, I’m going to share exactly how I tested the product, what I think went wrong, and who in the gray hair community might actually benefit from this shampoo and conditioner (even if I definitely did not).

Note: I wasn’t feeling well when I shot my Just Nutritive “after” photos, so they came out awful – most of them are unusable. So, if you’d like to see what my hair looked like, you can watch the video below. Or just keep scrolling for the full story. Thanks!

In this video, I show you exactly what happened when I tested Just Nutritive’s Gray Hair Duo for 10 days.

The Mistake I Made Before Day One

Normally, when I decide to test a product for this channel, I do my homework.

I read reviews. I check comments. I ask people in my gray hair Facebook group what they think. And I always read the ingredients list.

But for some unknown reason, I decided to throw caution to the wind this time.

I just ordered the products and tried them out without doing any research first.

Yep. That was a mistake.

Day One: Everything Was Perfect

On the first day, everything was gravy.

My hair and scalp felt super clean. When my hair dried, it felt soft, silky, and smooth – exactly what I love.

At the beginning of day two, my hair still looked fantastic.

Then things took a turn.

By The End of Day Two: Grease City

By the end of day two, my hair started to look greasy and feel dirty.

This hasn’t happened to me since I was a hormonal teenager, so I knew something was off!

But I kept testing to make sure this wasn’t a fluke.

The same thing happened again. First day? Great. End of day two? Greasy and dirty.

After almost 10 days of this pattern, I finally threw in the towel and said, “This isn’t working.”

Then Things Got REALLY Strange

Here’s where it gets weird.

I woke up one morning and decided it was time to start fresh. I grabbed my current favorite gray hair shampoo and conditioner, Silvina London. I love these products and always get great results with them.

But this time? I did not.

Instead, my hair came out feeling like straw. Staticky. Dry as all get-out.

I knew it wasn’t Silvina London’s fault because I use it all the time with fantastic results.

So I got on my phone and reached out to my BFF and gray hair care expert, Joli Campbell, from QuickSilverHair.

And I asked her: “What in the heck is going on?”

The Problem: I Skipped a Crucial Step

Joli advised me to do what I hadn’t done yet (to my eternal shame) – actually take a look at the ingredients list.

When we looked at it together, she pointed out something crucial: these products are loaded with oils.

And when you have low-porosity, fine-to-medium-density hair as I do, that is NOT good.

Here’s what happens: the oils coat your hair, but they don’t penetrate the hair shaft. So they slide off, leaving it dirty and greasy and absorbing stuff without actually moisturizing your hair.

Understanding your hair porosity is REALLY IMPORTANT when choosing products.

If you don’t know your hair type, make sure to read Joli’s excellent article: What Is Your Hair Type? An Ultimate Guide where she walks you through the process of figuring out your hair type.

The Recovery Process That Didn’t Work

Joli recommended that I clarify my hair and do a deep conditioning treatment.

I used my go-to products: Malibu C Un-Do-Goo clarifying shampoo (the only Malibu C product that’s safe for gray hair) and a conditioner from Oway.

Same results. My hair was still really dry and staticky. I couldn’t do anything with it!

So I can’t totally fault Just Nutritive. They weren’t lying about what was in the product. I just didn’t bother looking before I used it.

I’m confident I can get my hair back to normal. But in the meantime, let this be your cautionary tale.

The Just Nutritive Yellowing Issue I Missed

Here’s another thing I would’ve caught if I’d done my due diligence: some women reported that these products yellowed their hair.

The conditioner contains argan oil. And argan oil is one of those products I recommend women with gray hair who are prone to yellowing avoid.

Why?

Argan oil is amber-colored, and it can stain your hair. This is especially true for women with fine hair.

If you’re transitioning to gray and want to keep your silver bright and beautiful, you need to pay attention to these details.

The Lessons I Learned (So You Don’t Have To)

  1. Always read the ingredients list first!
  2. Know your hair type and your porosity.
  3. And read reviews and comments from other women before purchasing a product.

Once I finally got around to reading the reviews and comments, I noticed a clear pattern:

Women with coarse or wiry gray hair seem to LOVE these products. Maybe that’s exactly what their hair needs.

But women with fine or medium density hair? Or women with low-porosity hair like me?

This is NOT the product for them.

I would’ve known that if I’d just done my homework in the first place. Lesson learned!

Who These Products ARE For

Let me be clear: Just Nutritive isn’t a bad product.

It’s just not the right product for me or MY hair type.

If you have coarse, wiry gray hair that needs extra moisture and conditioning, these products might be great for you.

But if you have fine, medium-density, or low-porosity hair? Skip these and look for something lighter that won’t coat your strands.

Hey, Katie! I’m so sorry that you experienced bad results! Your hair is so healthy and resilient – you will have it back to its full beauty in no time. Thank you for testing this for us, though – that was brave!

I’m always searching for the ‘best’ products for my silver hair and I appreciate influencers who try new products and share their results, so I know which are worth purchasing. Lately, I’ve been using Oribe Silverati and I love it! I remember from one of your videos you said that the white or silver colored shampoos are much better than the gold or amber colored ones, to prevent possible staining of the hair
and this shampoo is the prettiest pearly silver color! It makes my hair full of volume and holds the curl better than other shampoos – and the smell is divine! It’s pricey, but I think it’s totally worth it! You may have tried it already, but definitely wanted to share, in case you hadn’t. Thanks for your videos, blog, interviews, newsletter, etc. – your advice is always so helpful! You got me through the whole growing out process and now I’m loving my hair for the first time in a very long time!😘❤️

    1. Thanks, Tonja! I eventually did get it back to normal – I’m going to post what happened shortly. (This blog post was based off a video I did last month). I’m so glad you had a good experience with Oribe Silverati – I’m embarassed to say I’ve had a bottle for over a year and haven’t had a chance to test it you. You’ve inspired me to do it!

Thanks so much for your kind words – I’m so happy to hear this! Glad you love your hair!
