This Product Made My Gray Hair Look Fuller, Brighter, and More Dimensional

I honestly didn’t think there were any gray hair products left that could surprise me.

But then I tried Silvering’s Border Line Double Optical Fillers, and immediately realized that this was something genuinely different.

With this one product, you can add highlights, lowlights, and even achieve the appearance of fuller hair.

Why is that such a big deal?

Because most products designed to do these things weren’t created with naturally silver hair in mind: they can look muddy on our gray hair, stain our hair, or simply fail to blend in naturally.

Border Line is different because it was created specifically for gray-haired women by a gray-haired woman.

It’s washable, customizable, and comes in a variety of shades designed to work with different gray hair patterns and tones.

I’ve used Silvering’s products for a couple of years now, and they’ve become one of my favorite brands because they really understand the beauty and challenges of naturally silver hair.

What’s most fun about the Border Line Doubles is that they let you play with your silver hair. You can experiment to create exactly the look you want with zero commitment (it washes out!) and zero risk (no staining!).

In this Border Line Double Optical Fillers review, I’ll show you exactly how I used it on my own naturally gray hair, and whether I think it’s worth buying.

Please note: Even though Silvering sent me these products to test, this is not a sponsored post.  As always, all opinions are my own and not influenced by any outside party.

What Exactly Is Border Line?

Border Line Double Optical Fillers are two-tone optical filling powders.  Each Double includes a white shade, a companion darker shade, and an application brush.

The Doubles come in two different shades:

  • Salt & Pepper if your original hair shade was cooler/darker (black, dark brown).
  • Sugar & Spice if your original hair shade was warmer/lighter (blonde, red, light brown).

What’s really nice is that you can blend colors to perfectly match your own unique gray hair shade.

Note: If you only need help filling in visible scalp areas or brightening white hair, Silvering also sells the White Border Line shade separately.

I tested the Doubles for this review because I wanted to experiment with both highlights and lowlights, but some women may find that the white shade alone is all they need.

The full list of ingredients is available on Silvering’s website, but I do want to point out that these are made with certified asbestos-free talc and are transfer-resistant, which means they won’t stain your pillows, clothing, or bedding.

That’s a huge bonus!

✔ Creates temporary highlights and lowlights
✔ Makes hair appear fuller
✔ Adds dimension to silver hair
✔ Washes out easily

What surprised me most: How customizable it is. You can create highlights, lowlights, or fuller-looking hair without permanently changing your natural silver.

All the Problems Border Line Solves

The Border Line Doubles solve several common frustrations women might have with their gray hair, including:

  • Hair that appears thinner than it actually is
  • Dullness or flatness
  • Loss of dimension (this is especially common for women with white hair)
  • Sparse-looking areas around the hairline or crown

And perhaps most importantly, they help solve what I like to call “the Baldness Illusion.”

Here’s what I mean:
When you first start growing out your gray hair, the contrast between your bright white roots and your scalp can suddenly make your part line look much wider than it really is.

For many women, it creates the unsettling illusion that they’re going bald – even when their hair density hasn’t actually changed at all!

This happens to a LOT of women during their gray hair transition and can cause genuine distress.  Believe me, I know – it happened to me!

The good news is that Border Line was specifically designed to help camouflage visible scalp areas and create the appearance of fuller hair.

I’ll show you exactly how it works below.

Here’s How I Experimented With Border Line Doubles on My Gray Hair

I tested the Doubles (salt & pepper) in a variety of ways:

1. Filling in My Hairline Instantly

My scalp is VERY pink.  So, depending on the lighting, my part line can sometimes look wider than it really is.

Since my roots are fairly white, I used the white shade to soften and fill in my part line.  Not only did it cover up my pink scalp, but it created the illusion of instantly fuller hair!

2. Camouflaging Cowlicks and Sparse Areas

I have a massive cowlick on the back of my head.  Unfortunately, depending on how I style my hair, it can look like an actual bald spot, to my dismay.

So I used the white shade, once again, to fill in my scalp.

Note: I should have blended it with the darker shade to better match my hair color, but I was still happy with the coverage!

3. Brightening My Silver Highlights

The white powder can be used to add highlights or to brighten your existing highlights without the need for bleach or toner.

This works best if your gray hair is darker than mine.

My silver hair is too light, so the white powder didn’t show up well on its own, as you can see here:

HOT TIP: I contacted Silvering for advice, and they pointed out that, due to my hair color, the white powder would show up more if I applied some of the darker powder next to it.

You can see the results in the next section – it made a huge difference!

4. Adding Temporary Lowlights and Dimension

This is where Border Line really shines: the darker shades allow you to create instant lowlights and dimension.

I already have built-in lowlights, as almost all the hair underneath my top layer is much darker than my silver outer layer of hair. However, since I mainly wear my hair down, nobody gets to see them!

So, to get visible lowlights, I took the salt & pepper shade and brushed it right next to the areas I’d already brightened with the white powder.  When I did that, the white popped more, and my silver hair looked much more dimensional.

I think using the darker shade would especially be fun for women with all-white hair.

To be absolutely clear, I think white hair is gorgeous as is. But many women with white hair have told me they miss having a little more depth and dimension, and these darker Border Line shades can provide that temporarily.

Best of all, Border Line washes out easily (usually in one shampoo), and it’s much less expensive than heading to the salon for permanent lowlights.

5. Filling in Sparse Areas

My hair is fairly thick, but when I get stressed out (which, unfortunately, happens fairly frequently), I tend to lose hair around my temples and the sides of my head.

So I used the salt & pepper shade, blended with a bit of the white powder, to fill in the darker areas around my temples and hairline.

That’s another thing I love about this product – everyone’s gray hair pattern and shade is unique, and Silvering acknowledges that.  So the fact that you can blend the two Border Line shades together until you achieve your desired match is a huge bonus.

Now, I’ve been demonstrating the Salt & Pepper Doubles, as those are my colors.  My natural hair color was very dark brown / almost black.

But women like my Mom, who was a natural redhead, would use the Sugar & Spice combo to blend their own custom colors:

How to Apply

There is a bit of a learning curve with this product, but once you understand how it works, the application process becomes much easier.

If you’re trying to fill in visible scalp areas around your hairline or part, coat your brush with the correct shade, or blend two shades together.

Starting about ¼ inch away, apply the powder and gently push it towards your scalp or hairline.

That pushing motion fills in the visible scalp areas and creates the illusion of fuller, denser hair.

If you want to amplify your highlights, sweep the white shade along the lighter areas of your hair.

If you want to deepen your lowlights, sweep the dark shade along the darker areas of your hair.  If you don’t notice much difference, make sure to sweep the white shade on either side of the dark streaks to create more contrast.

To maintain the shininess of your white hair, apply the white powder one layer beneath the topmost layer of hair so that the outermost layer is powder-free.

Hot Tip: Start with a small amount of product and build gradually until you achieve the effect you want

Everything I Love Most About This Product

  • It’s designed specifically for gray-haired women, not blondes (many “gray-friendly” products were originally designed for blondes, but we have different needs).
  • It washes out easily (usually after just 1 shampoo).
  • You can experiment with highlights, lowlights, and fullness without heading to the salon.
  • The shades can be blended together to match your own unique gray hair tone (or you can get creative and add a new shade to your hair).
  • It lets you change up your look without the risk of permanently altering your natural silver hair.

Most importantly, it lets you have fun and be creative with your gray hair – and everyone needs a little fun now and then!

Is There a Downside?

There really aren’t many downsides to this product, but there are a couple worth mentioning:

  • The learning curve: It took me a little while to figure out how to use this product correctly
  • Application time: If you have long hair, the application process can take a bit of time.

The good news is, once you get the hang of using it, the application process becomes much quicker & easier.

And, of course, it’s washable, so if you don’t love the way it looks, you can wash it out and try again another day.

Where to Buy?

Final Thoughts: Gray Hair Should Be Fun

A lot of women worry that once they go gray, they’ll feel stuck or that their hair will be boring.

If that’s a fear that you have, this product helps put it to rest.  Border Line lets you experiment – and have fun – with your gray hair without any of the stress you might experience from using permanent color.

If you’re interested in adding temporary lowlights and dimension, I’d recommend the Border Line Doubles for sure! But if your main goal is simply filling in visible scalp areas or making your lighter highlights pop, the standalone White Border Line powder may be enough.
