BTWCo.’s Haircare Products for Silver Sisters are Just What You’ve Been Looking For!
As promised in my interview with blogger Lauren Stein, here is a full review of her BTWCo. Haircare Product line.
I started growing out my gray hair in February 2018. As I scoured the web for information about the gray hair grow-out process, I discovered Lauren Stein’s great blog, How Bourgeois.

Lauren started graying very young and she gave up hair-dye altogether in her 30s (partly due to a reaction to PPD, and also due to a desire to live a more natural lifestyle).
Her gray hair is utterly gorgeous, so when I found out that she and her husband started a hair care line specifically for gray hair, I leapt at the chance to try it!
I’ve been very pleased with the By the Way, Your Hair Looks Fabulous (aka BTWCo.) products, and I’m confident that you’ll love them too.
Although I purchased many of these products myself, some of them were donated for review purposes by BTWCo. As always, the concept, opinions, and content are my own. This post may contain affiliate links. For full disclosure, click HERE.

What Makes BTWCo. Haircare Products Special?
Why do I love BTWCo. products? It’s simple!
They are:
- Cruelty-Free
- Made in Canada
- Contain no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and silicone
- Curly-Girl Friendly
- Reasonably Priced
And best of all, Lauren is a fellow silver sister, so she understands the special needs of gray hair.
If you’ve taken a peek at my Current Gray Hair Care Routine, you’ll note that I include several BTWCo. products in my daily routine. BTWCo. products might be made with silver sisters in mind, but they are great for all hair types.
BTWCo. products might be made with silver sisters in mind, but they are great for all hair types.
As an example: My teenage son has gorgeous, super-curly, dark auburn hair. He struggled with his hair for years until we started him on the Curly Girl Method. He wasn’t fond of some of the CGM products I bought for him, but he swears by the BTWCo. products.
The lack of sulfates and other damaging ingredients leaves his hair (and mine) clean, soft, silky, and frizz-free!
BTWCo. Shampoos for Gray Hair
Daily Moisturizing Shampoo
BTWCo. Daily Moisturizing Shampoo is lovely. It’s very light, and since it’s sulfate-free, my hair doesn’t feel weighed down. It’s my go-to shampoo!
The Daily Moisturizing shampoo keeps my hair feeling soft and hydrated. It’s for all hair types, but it’s especially great for color-treated hair, gray hair and dry hair.
Purple Shampoo
Gray hair (and dyed blonde hair) can sometimes take on brassy yellow tones. This can happen due to a variety of factors such as sun exposure, pollution, hard water, and other things can cause this to happen.
Purple is the opposite of yellow on the color wheel, so purple hair products are great for neutralizing yellow tones. (If you are a brunette with brassy orange tones, you can use blue shampoo).
What’s nice about purple shampoos is that they not only tone down the yellow tones, but they also brighten your gray hair!
I personally use blue shampoo as my hair still has a few inches of brassy orangey-brown ends, but I have experimented with BTWCo’s Purple Shampoo and it definitely brightened my silvers.
As with the other BTWCo. products, the purple shampoo is lightly scented, with hints of sandalwood and vanilla. I’m not a huge fan of sandalwood, but the scent is not overpowering – it’s pretty subtle.
Just remember – purple shampoo works best on dry hair. Put it on dry hair, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then go into the shower and lather it and rinse it out.
Purple shampoo can be VERY drying, so I always deep condition afterward. You should only use purple shampoo once or twice a week – if you use it more frequently, you can end up with a purple tint to your hair. (Which is fine, if that’s what you’re going for, of course!)
Clarifying Shampoo
The BTWCo. Clarifying Shampoo is great for removing product and environmental build-up. Clarifying shampoo, used sparingly (once a week)i is also a great way to fade hair dye.
Clarifying shampoo has a major drying effect, so make sure to use a deep-conditioner afterwards to hydrate your hair.
If you use a deep conditioner (and leave it on for anywhere from 5-30 minutes) after clarifying, your hair will feel very soft and clean.
BTWCo. Conditioners for Gray Hair
Daily Moisturizing Conditioner
Daily Moisturizing Conditioner is a wonderful daily conditioner. As with the shampoo, it’s light and doesn’t weigh your hair down. I use it as my go-to conditioner. It leaves my hair feeling very hydrated and smooth.
Purple Conditioner
BTWCo. makes a very nice purple conditioner, but as my hair tends to be very dry anyway, I did not find it sufficiently hydrating to counter the drying action of the purple shampoo.

However, if I use it in conjunction with the Daily Moisturizing shampoo, it works great and my hair doesn’t feel dry or brittle after blow-drying.
I used that combo this morning and love the way my hair looks and feels!
Life Changing Leave-In Conditioner for Gray Hair
The name says it all! Life Changing Leave-In Conditioner is AWESOME! I use this on days when I don’t feel like blow-drying my hair, but you can use it before blow-drying, too.
It does a great job of reducing frizz and leaves your hair soft and shiny.
BTWCo. Styling Products for Gray Hair
Silicone-Free Serum
I absolutely love the Silicone-Free Serum!
You are supposed to use this on wet hair, to reduce frizz. And it does a great job when used that way. But I often use it on dry hair.
I like to put a dab of the serum on those little wiry new gray hairs that stand straight up on the top of your head. It really helps smooth them down.
Make sure to only use a little bit – as with any serum, if you use too much, your hair can get a greasy look.
Silicone-Free Styling Cream
The BTWCo. styling cream gets rave reviews on Amazon! I haven’t figured out yet how to fit it into my hair care routine, but after reading the reviews, I think I need definitely need to!
The styling cream is for use after you blow-dry or use hot rollers. It gives your hair a smooth finish.
What I find interesting about this styling cream is that you can reactivate it later in the day by adding a little water to your hair. What the heck? I love that idea!
I’ve only used it a couple of times when I let my hair air dry and wanted to keep it frizz-free. I had never used styling cream before, so I wasn’t actually sure HOW to use it.
I’ll try it this week and update the review once I have.
Final Thoughts on BTWCo. Products for Gray Hair
As you can probably tell, I’m pretty enthusiastic about these products. The fact that they are cruelty-free, reasonably priced, and gentle makes them rank up with some of my favorite haircare products!
